Asphalt Resurfacing and Overlay

Resurfacing is the best value in paving when the base is genuinely sound, and the most commonly mis-sold service in the trade when it is not. An overlay is the same idea described differently: a new layer bonded over the existing driveway rather than a full rebuild.

Ask about asphalt resurfacing and overlay

The assessment matters more than the work. A new surface follows both the shape and the behaviour of whatever sits beneath it, so a flat drive stays flat and a moving base keeps moving. Cracks are routed, blown clean and hot filled first, because a crack paved straight over reflects back through the new layer along exactly the old lines within a season or two.

Where the drive has depressions or a lost crown, a levelling course restores the geometry before the surface goes on. A tack coat bonds new to old; skipping it produces slippage cracking under turning vehicles, and you cannot see that it was skipped.

Why crack preparation decides the outcome

Resurfacing is the best value in paving when the base is genuinely sound. It is also the most commonly mis-sold service in the trade, because a new surface follows the shape and the behaviour of whatever is beneath it.

Cracks left open telegraph straight back through a new layer, usually within a season or two, along exactly the old lines. That is called reflective cracking and it is the single most common resurfacing complaint. Cracks are routed to sound edges, blown clean with compressed air so filler bonds to asphalt rather than dust, and hot filled before any new material goes down.

Levelling course, tack coat and geometry

Where the existing drive has depressions or a lost crown, a levelling course goes down first so the finished surface has correct geometry rather than reproducing the old profile. Paving flat over a flat drive gives you a smooth reservoir.

A tack coat at the interface bonds new to old. Skipping it produces slippage cracking and delamination, where the new layer shears against the old one under turning vehicles. It is a cheap step that a hurried crew will drop and you will not be able to see that it was dropped.

How Massachusetts conditions drive the specification

Massachusetts sets frost depth at 48 inches. A driveway has no footings, so nothing physically reaches four feet, but the frozen zone does, and anything frost can lift it will lift. That makes the base and its drainage the whole structural argument on residential work in this state.

Hot mix here is produced to the MassDOT Standard Specifications, Section 460, using Superpave designs graded by nominal maximum aggregate size. A residential surface course is normally a 12.5 mm mix; a binder course underneath is typically 19.0 mm. Dense graded asphalt needs a compacted lift at least three times the nominal maximum aggregate size, so 12.5 mm wants roughly an inch and a half minimum and 19.0 mm wants nearer three. A coarse mix laid too thin cannot lock its stone together and ravels from the first winter.

Compaction is where the money goes and nobody can see it

Hot mix leaves the plant around 275 to 300 degrees and stops accepting compaction near 185. Everything a roller will ever achieve has to happen inside that window, which shrinks fast on a cool day, on a thin lift, or with wind across the site. Target density on a properly rolled mat sits in the low to mid nineties as a percentage of theoretical maximum.

A few percentage points below that and the mat is permeable. Water then lives inside the asphalt rather than on top of it, and every freeze-thaw cycle works from within. This is why two driveways that look identical on the day of paving can be ten years apart in service life, and why laydown temperature and roller pattern matter more than the brochure the material came with.

Dig Safe, permits and paperwork

M.G.L. c. 82 s. 40 requires Dig Safe notification at least 72 hours before excavation so utilities can mark their lines. It is free and we file it. What it does not cover is private underground work on your own property: septic tanks and leach fields, wells, irrigation, invisible fencing, propane lines and power runs to outbuildings. Tell us where those are, because heavy equipment over a leach field is an expensive mistake Dig Safe will not catch.

Massachusetts also requires a written contract for residential work over $1,000 under M.G.L. c. 142A, and registration under that law gives you access to the state Guaranty Fund. Ask any contractor for their HIC number before paying anything.

Common questions

Before you book

What is the difference between resurfacing and an overlay?

In practice very little, and the words get used interchangeably. Both put a new layer of asphalt over your existing driveway. Overlay tends to describe the thinner, most straightforward version on a drive in good condition; resurfacing tends to imply more preparation first, such as a levelling course or significant crack work. What matters is not the label but whether the base underneath can support either.

Will an overlay raise my driveway height?

Yes, by the thickness of the new layer. Mid-drive that rarely matters. At the garage threshold, the street apron and against adjoining walkways it matters a great deal, and if your drive already sits close to the garage door an overlay can push water toward the building. We check every transition before recommending one, and sometimes the answer is milling the apron to preserve the threshold relationship.
