Residential Driveway Paving

This is the pillar of the paving side of what we do. A residential driveway is small-scale road construction and it behaves like one, which means the part deciding whether it lasts is the part nobody ever sees. Base depth, compaction and pitch win the job. The asphalt on top is the easy half.

Ask about residential driveway paving

We build in layers. Subgrade excavated to depth, soft material removed rather than buried, compacted processed gravel base at a depth set by what the test dig actually shows, then binder and surface course compacted while hot with the pitch set so water leaves rather than pools.

A typical residential project runs around twelve hundred square feet and takes one to three days. Layer depths go on the written quote, which matters when you are comparing bids: a quote saying 'pave driveway' and one specifying compacted base depth are not describing the same job even when the prices look alike.

No obligation. We reply within 24 hours.

What actually goes under the surface

A residential driveway is small-scale road construction and it behaves like one. We excavate to design depth, take out soft or organic material rather than compacting and burying it, and place processed gravel base compacted in lifts. Compacting bad material does not make it good material, and a soft spot buried under six inches of gravel is a pothole with a two year fuse.

Base depth is decided from what the test dig shows, not from a price list. Free draining sand and gravel subgrade needs less than frost-susceptible silty till. Where drainage cannot be achieved by grade alone, it gets built in while everything is open, because retrofitting drainage under a finished driveway means taking the driveway back up.

Pitch, crown and where the water goes

A driveway should shed water to its sides across its whole length. Two percent is a normal working figure. Flat is not neutral, flat is a reservoir, and the classic long-drive symptom is a cracked strip running down the centre where the crown was lost to years of grading and plowing.

The apron at the garage matters more than any other three feet of the job. If the slab sits below the driveway, or the drive runs downhill at the building, no surface treatment fixes it. That needs regrading or a trench drain across the threshold, and it needs deciding before paving rather than after the first heavy rain.

How Massachusetts conditions drive the specification

Massachusetts sets frost depth at 48 inches. A driveway has no footings, so nothing physically reaches four feet, but the frozen zone does, and anything frost can lift it will lift. That makes the base and its drainage the whole structural argument on residential work in this state.

Hot mix here is produced to the MassDOT Standard Specifications, Section 460, using Superpave designs graded by nominal maximum aggregate size. A residential surface course is normally a 12.5 mm mix; a binder course underneath is typically 19.0 mm. Dense graded asphalt needs a compacted lift at least three times the nominal maximum aggregate size, so 12.5 mm wants roughly an inch and a half minimum and 19.0 mm wants nearer three. A coarse mix laid too thin cannot lock its stone together and ravels from the first winter.

Compaction is where the money goes and nobody can see it

Hot mix leaves the plant around 275 to 300 degrees and stops accepting compaction near 185. Everything a roller will ever achieve has to happen inside that window, which shrinks fast on a cool day, on a thin lift, or with wind across the site. Target density on a properly rolled mat sits in the low to mid nineties as a percentage of theoretical maximum.

A few percentage points below that and the mat is permeable. Water then lives inside the asphalt rather than on top of it, and every freeze-thaw cycle works from within. This is why two driveways that look identical on the day of paving can be ten years apart in service life, and why laydown temperature and roller pattern matter more than the brochure the material came with.

Dig Safe, permits and paperwork

M.G.L. c. 82 s. 40 requires Dig Safe notification at least 72 hours before excavation so utilities can mark their lines. It is free and we file it. What it does not cover is private underground work on your own property: septic tanks and leach fields, wells, irrigation, invisible fencing, propane lines and power runs to outbuildings. Tell us where those are, because heavy equipment over a leach field is an expensive mistake Dig Safe will not catch.

Massachusetts also requires a written contract for residential work over $1,000 under M.G.L. c. 142A, and registration under that law gives you access to the state Guaranty Fund. Ask any contractor for their HIC number before paying anything.

Common questions

Before you book

How long does a residential driveway take?

One to three days for most jobs. A straightforward twelve hundred square foot drive with a sound base is usually a single day. Removing an old surface adds time, and significant base or drainage work can add another. The number of days is written on your quote with confirmed start and finish dates before we book you in.

How soon can I drive on it?

Foot traffic the same day, vehicles after twenty four to forty eight hours depending on temperature. Asphalt stays soft for several weeks after that. Avoid parking in the identical spot every night, do not turn your wheels while stopped, and keep jack stands, kickstands and trailer tongues off the surface. Most first-year damage comes from those three things.
