Marathon Paving in the Blackstone Valley
The Blackstone Valley towns south of Worcester have a housing stock and a landscape that produce a particular kind of driveway problem. Mill village housing built tight on small lots with short steep drives, mixed in with rural properties on real acreage. Water moves fast through this valley and it moves across a lot of driveways on the way.
Grade is the defining feature
Millbury, Sutton and the older parts of Grafton were built into slope. The mill villages sit in the valley bottoms and the housing climbs the sides. That produces short steep drives, retaining walls close to the asphalt, and runoff that arrives from above the property rather than falling on it.
When we quote a driveway in these towns we look uphill from it first. A drive that gets washed across during heavy rain will be undermined from below no matter how good the surface is, and paving over that problem is money spent twice.
Mill village driveways
The village housing through Bramanville, Wilkinsonville, Fisherville and around the older parts of Oxford is close together on small lots. Drives are short, some are shared, and many have been patched piecemeal over decades with whatever material was available at the time.
A driveway with five different patches in it moves differently in each area, and an overlay laid over that tends to crack along the old patch lines within a couple of years. Those driveways need a closer look than a uniform surface does, and sometimes the honest answer is removing the accumulated patchwork and rebuilding those sections properly.
Ledge and rural drives
South and west of the river the lots open up and so do the driveways. Sutton in particular has ledge close to the surface across a lot of the town, which limits how deep a base can go in places and changes the design for those sections.
Gravel drives are common out here and converting one to asphalt is a bigger project than most people expect. A gravel surface that feels solid is not the same thing as a compacted base at the right depth. We dig test spots at the estimate so the number you get reflects what is actually under your driveway.
