Marathon Paving in the Wachusett Region
The towns around the Wachusett Reservoir have two things in common that change how a driveway should be built. They sit higher and colder than Worcester, so the frost goes deeper and the winter runs longer. And they sit inside a public drinking water watershed, so what happens to runoff is not purely a private matter.
Deeper frost means deeper base
Holden, Rutland, Paxton and Sterling all sit meaningfully higher than the city, and Rutland is about as high as Central Massachusetts gets. The frozen layer goes further into the ground here through the winter and there is more ground movement under a driveway as a result.
That shows up as heaving, cracks that reopen along the same lines every February no matter how often the drive gets sealed. Sealing a heaving driveway is an annual expense that fixes nothing, because the movement is happening at depth and sealer works on the top fraction of an inch. The things that actually help are base depth and drainage, so there is less water sitting under the asphalt waiting to freeze.
What the watershed means for your project
The Wachusett Reservoir supplies drinking water to Greater Boston, and the state Division of Water Supply Protection holds a great deal of land through this region. Holden, West Boylston, Rutland, Sterling and parts of Boylston sit within the watershed.
Replacing an existing driveway on the same footprint is normally straightforward. Long drives and tree cover
Driveways out here run long. A hundred feet is ordinary and several hundred is not unusual, frequently curved and often tree lined.
Shade keeps a driveway damp, and damp asphalt oxidizes faster and grows moss along the edges. Organic material holds water against the surface, which is cosmetic at first and structural later. Root heave near mature trees is a separate problem from frost heave and has different fixes, so it is worth identifying which one you are looking at before paying to repair it.
